From Garage to Collage

If you can’t tell already, Mr. A and I have our differences.  He is romantic, sensitive and kind.  I am cynical, hardened and totally selfish.  I have no idea why he loves me (it’s the boobs), but I am glad he does…  If ever there was a reason to believe that opposites attract, we are it.

When Mr. A and I first moved in together, it was obvious that I would have no problem taking complete lead as curator of all decor and design in our home.  (If I didn’t, I would be blogging from here.)  He literally had a blow-up mattress and a Star Wars bathroom set when I met him.  What he didn’t have in furnishings, he did have in compact discs.  In one of my recent organizing frenzies, I downloaded all CDs in our house to digital files, leaving nearly 700 old discs and covers to find a home/use for.

Thankfully, I knew exactly where those covers could go.  Chad Mize is the founder of Bluelucy, a full service design studio and art brand.  He is also a super talented artist and all-around awesome guy.  His works are infused with humor, color and a not so subtle nod to pop culture… i.e. they are so ME.  So when I sent him both my and the mister’s CD covers, he didn’t blink.

Chad started off by creating a background collage of imagery that drew from our eclectic musical tastes (“NWA meets NKOTB” as he puts it), then added layers of our cover art and holographic material in strips.  He finished it off by building a frame around the entire piece and pouring what must have been an insane amount of resin over it.  But boy does that baby shine!

Chad also was kind enough to answer my “third degree three”:

  1. What inspires you?  A lot of my inspiration comes from pop & music culture. Sometimes from animals and nature. Retro future space funk. Really depends on the piece I am working on. I tend to like bright and vivid. I am inspired by pop artists like Warhol and Haring. Big & Bold.
  2. What item is top of your must-have list right now?  I love having my camera with me. I’ve been really into photography and obsessively documenting my life/travels/friends/pets over the past few years.
  3. What makes someone fabulous in your mind?  Intellect. I’m drawn to smart people. Well traveled, talented. People that are making stuff or making stuff happen.

Although Chad keeps quite busy in his St. Petersburg, FL gallery, hosting group shows every other month and cultivating a design business, he loves doing commissions (which start at $500) and continues to sell his personal works through the gallery and online.  For those with a more modest budget, Bluelucy also has a kick-ass Zazzle store.

As you can see, my piece – entitled “Listen Up” – is perfectly at home in Casa AA.  And instead of having twenty Case Logic books just sitting in our attic collecting dust, we now have beautiful art in our family room collecting compliments.  Finally, a decorative element that both Mr. A and I can agree on (because we sure didn’t agree on that hot pink Moroccan pouf!).

Wonderful post! That piece of art works perfectly in your hot-pink accented home. (I STILL have a gallon of hot-pink paint sitting in my garage that my SO has refused to let me use).

OMG, I want to get together with you and have a hot pink party!!! It is slowly taking over my entire house. The hubs is being desensitized – it is awesome.
